Signs and Symptoms of HIV and AIDS

When do I develop AIDS? What are signs that I have AIDS?

Several years after infection with HIV, a person may experience symptoms of particular illnesses and cancers.  These are the result of the infected person's immune system being damaged by HIV to the point where it is no longer able to fight off these opportunistic infections.

The current Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC) case definition for AIDS in adults and adolescents (age 13 and over) is:

They are HIV positive AND they have at least 2 major signs and at least 1 minor sign of at least 1 defining AIDS defining illness (the presence of one or more opportunistic infections.)
