About HIV Testing and Viral Load

What is the Viral Load?

Viral load refers to the amount of HIV present in the blood.  It is measured in number of viral copies per millilitre of blood.

Viral load is a very important measure used to monitor HIV patients on antiretroviral treatment.

A high viral load can indicate a greater risk for the progression to HIV disease.  The risk of transmission of HIV from a woman to her foetus also increases if the viral load is higher.
